Properties along the Salmon River corridor, Carmen creek beds, and low-lying pastures in the Lemhi Hole encounter severe seasonal mosquito hatches between May and August. High spring runoff creates temporary oxbows, irrigation pools, and standing surface water that produce Culex and Aedes mosquitoes within 7 to 10 days of sustained 65°F daytime temperatures. A standard suburban perimeter spray fails in this high-desert mountain valley because wind drift off the Beaverhead Mountains and rapid riparian foliage growth break down light indoor-style barriers within days.

Effective protection requires a two-front protocol. Standing irrigation ditches, pond margins, and livestock troughs in Baker, Tendoy, and Brooklyn receive localized treatments of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a natural bacterial larvicide that destroys mosquito larvae without compromising irrigation water, native rainbow trout populations, or cattle. For resting adult populations, microencapsulated synthetic pyrethroid treatments are applied directly to the underside of dense deciduous foliage, willows, and structural windbreaks around decks, porches, and outbuildings up to 10 feet high.

Single-application yard fogging fits one-time outdoor gatherings or seasonal fish camp setups along Highway 93 down toward Shoup. However, rural acreage with active irrigation requires structured seasonal maintenance every 21 to 28 days to break continuous egg cycles. The trade-off centers on treatment duration: fogging knocks down adult insects for 24 to 48 hours, whereas residual foliar barrier applications bond to leaf cuticles and resist rain wash-off for three to four weeks, maintaining a defensive perimeter against incoming swarms from neighboring wetlands.
